Translating and validating a Japanese version of the Patient Care Ownership Scale: a multicenter cross-sectional study

Abstract Background Patient care ownership (PCO) is an essential component in medical professionalism and crucial for delivering high-quality care. The 15-item PCO Scale (PCOS) a validated questionnaire quantifying residents; however, no corresponding tool assessing Japan exists. This study aimed to develop Japanese version of the PCOS (J-PCOS) validate it among trainees. Methods We performed multicenter cross-sectional survey test validity reliability J-PCOS. sample was trainees postgraduate years 1–5 Japan. participants completed J-PCOS questionnaire. Construct assessed through exploratory confirmatory factor analyses. Internal consistency examined by calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficients inter-item correlations. Results During period, 437 at 48 hospitals Exploratory analysis extracted four factors: assertiveness, sense ownership, diligence, being “go-to” person. second had not been identified original PCOS, which may be related unique cultural feature Japan, namely, historical code personal conduct. Confirmatory supported this four-factor model, revealing good model fit indices. results correlations indicated adequate internal reliability. Conclusions developed its can used studies on education. Further should confirm robustness usefulness improving PCO.
